Products made from sea-grass mat production waste
This collection was developed for Viet Trang, a sea-grass SME in Vietnam. The project was carried out under the umbrella of two institutions - SPIN and UNIDO.
The project looked at using the waste generated by mainstream sea-grass mat processing for a new products. We bundled the waste together and connected them to form a surface. The resulting surface had the benefits of the sea-grass texture and in addition a springiness that the original mat lacked.
Another strategy applied was to use the traditional technique of stencilling on sea grass mats to create contemporary motifs that would align the mats with alternate lifestyle markets. Yoga mats were developed using bold, black stencils of asanas, using resized loom woven sea-grass mats
